TechWiseTV: Extending VoIP to Wireless LANs

Webcast Date: May 1, 2008

IS there a tool for managing the configurations of the 7921s centrally? i.e. needing to change WiFi settings on 100s of
telephones, etc.
Please see the latest version of the 7921G Administration Guide for info on integrating with Wavelink Avalanche
Server:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/7921g/6_0/english/administration/guide/7921wave.html

Where can I locate Mr. Purser's Perl script?
I will post at www.mytechwisetv.com in the show notes later today

Will you discuss the Infrastructure Setup, like ACS, Active Directory when setting up WLC, etc...?
We will save this for an upcoming show. We did not cover that in this one. You can read about that stuff at:
www.cisco.com/go/wireless

We currently have a voip with cisco equip, 1130 ag access points and AT&T Tilts, Could these be used to place voip call?
I just did a Google on that product. I do not see that it supports Wi-Fi, so the answer would be no.

Mary in the end mentioned something about adding mobility to CCVP certification. Is the certification of CCVP changing?
Not at this time. Here is a link with the current exam paths for CCVP:
http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/le3/le2/le37/le65/learning_certification_type_home.html

What is the name of the second tool? I notice that the audio of past episodes is available, but why not the video? I'd like to be
able to watch the video on a portable device (iPhone or iPod Touch). Does Cisco have plans to make the videos available for
download, rather than just streaming? Is this video available for download, rather than just streaming?
The second tool is Airmagnet Laptop. We are looking at Video Podcast right now however, in the mean time, We will
have them posted at www.cisco.com/go/interact plus check out the techwisetv rogue site at www.mytechwisetv.com For
daily updates look for Robb and Jimmy Ray on twitter at www.twitter.com

Can you please send me the pdf of VOIP traffic model? As I am researching nowadays about it for our company?
Not sure what you might be referring to? Feel free to drop us a note at techwisetv@cisco.com or in a discussion thread
at www.mytechwisetv.com

What push-to-talk applications is better to implement over Cisco Wireless Network?
Vocera and Berbee are popular solutions. If you’re looking to use PTT on a 7921, Berbee has been used for some time.
We have a PTT key on the 7921 that can be used to initiate PTT sessions via the XML integration.

Is CCVP certification is being modified?
They modified the exam track to update for newer version of UC Manager The CVOICE exam was also updated. Here
is a link: http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/le3/le2/le37/le65/learning_certification_type_home.html

How can you get a 911 location of a user, you referenced IP subnet but how do you provide a building/floor/room number?
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/7920/5_0/english/design/guide/wrlapdxg.html#wp1006077
Look into emergency responder for E911 Calls

Question 151 said CCKM and AES but only WPA not WPA2, I thought WPA2 was AES?
AES encryption can also be supported in WPA1 - the client must also support it. Both WPA2 and WPA have TKIP and
AES options

Is the Cisco 7921G a SIP phone, or will it work only with Cisco Call Manager?
The 7921G is SCCP only today, but SIP is roadmapped.

Where can we find the perl script for finding rogue waps?
I will post it at www.mytechwisetv.com later today

In terms of number of calls a AP can handle, does type of encryption used impact them? What are the numbers?
Type of encryption is not the determining factor. For N radios, you can expect good quality with up to about 9 calls.
For a/b/g, about 7 calls.

This session was GREAT! One of the best to-date and the Training/Cert Info was a great add. Really enjoyed the VoiceCon
on-site interviews too!

Thanks for joining us. This and all TechWiseTV episodes are also available on-demand at www.cisco.com/go/interact

No mention of FLUKE tools. Any idea how those tools rate?
They are OK. Fluke does make some good stuff. My issue has been that Fluke is too expensive and the maintenance
program sucks

thanks for the info on the survey! I assume we should be good since the survey and install is being done by a Cisco Gold
Partner. At least I would hope so for their sake!
Bigtime!! That is super mega extra important

If rogue APs are utilizing MFP, how will rogue containment work?
Unless the Rogue clients are also using MFP they can still be contained.

It was really a great webcast. I learned a lot about cisco VOIP over WLAN.
Thank you so much - be sure and fill out an eval!

Thanks for this great demo!
Thank you for the time!

Talking LWAP what is "subatomic handshake" ?
LWAPP splits the media access control (MAC) of a lightweight access point between the wireless LAN controller and
the lightweight access point. Timing-critical functions such as the subatomic handshake and emitting beacons to the
access point are managed at the access point. Other network-critical functions such as mobility management,
authentication, VLAN segregation, RF management, wireless IDS, and packet forwarding are managed at the wireless
LAN controller.

How do handle multicast for push-to-talk services?
This will depend on the deployment, but you should use the multicast-multicast mechanism of the Cisco Unified
Wireless Network, and use the IGMP snooping feature 158 Good crack on the drawings. I'm just as bad with that!
Thank you!

We have more than 100 1231 series APs which we are going to convert into LWAPP soon. But, do you mean to say that we
need to replace them all with 1250 series to get exceelent voice quality with WMM, etc?
Make sure you have done a survey for voice with the current AP layout. You may find you need to adjust the AP
placement in some spots. The 1231 can provide excellent voice quality.

Do you recommend a separate SSID only for voice?
Yes. A separate SSID for voice is typically recommended, this makes the implementation of QoS much more straight
forward. Please visit the link in the show notes to the "Voice over WLAN 4.1 Design guide" for more detailed
information!

How does the handshaking occur?
1. The mechanism to determine when to roam is not defined by the IEEE 802.11 specification and is, therefore, left to
vendors to implement. 2. Finding an AP to roam to is another mechanism that is vendor-specific. 2.1 Each mechanism
can employ one or both of the following mechanisms: ..Active scanning—The client actively searches for an AP. This
process usually involves the client sending probe requests on each channel it is configured to use (channels 1 to 11 in
North America) and waiting for probe responses from APs. The client then determines which AP is the ideal one to
roam to. ..Passive scanning—The client does not transmit any frames but rather listens for beacon frames on each
channel. The client continues to change channels at a set interval, just as with active scanning, but the client does not
send probe requests. ..This where I always ask to see if SSID broadcasting has been turned off as it will definitely hurt
roaming.

If you already have a Cisco VoIP implementation, how does wireless VoIP integrate with that? Does it work with
CallManager, or is it a separate piece of software?
Cisco wireless VoIP devices work with the wired voice infrastructure and the existing Call manager.

What range is considered a good signal strenght for VoWLAN? -65 to -75 dBm??
802.11a 6-54Mbbp -89dBm thru -74dBm 802.11g 6-54Mbsp -90 dBm thru -73 dBm 802.11b 1-11Mbps -95dBm thru -
85dBm

Is CCKM now supported with AES encryption?
CCKM with AES is supported by the Cisco Unified Wireless Network. The 7921G supports CCKM with AES, but this
is WPA support, not WPA2

WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE UTILITIES THAT THEY SHOW?
Descriptions have been added to the show notes, but the two demonstrated were Cisco Spectrum Expert and
AirMagnet Laptop Analyzer.

How Can I optime the Nokia E65, E61 and E51 with Nokia configuration tool? What parameters are better to use Nokia duals
with WLC4400 and AP1130 Network?
There are a few options that can be changed by Nokia Device Manager software (such as U-APSD and roaming
thresholds). As for the Nokia deployment info, please see the Nokia Eseries design guides. We are always updating this
with the latest info. On cisco.com:
http://www.cisco.com/web/partners/downloads/partner/WWChannels/download/nokia_design_guide.pdf
On Nokia's site: http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com/nokia_intellisync_call_connect_for_cisco_downloads.php

Do you think , will cisco phone 7921 support 802.11n in the short term? how will it affect current voip wireless deployments ?
The 7921 works with 802.11n access points. The 7921 will only do 802.11b/g on 2.4GHz or 802.11a on 5GHz. The
benefit that 802.11n access point bring to the 7921 is the MIMO antenna technology. MIMO improves the RF reception
of the 7921 11b/g or 79211a packets.

Ha, the ccx v5 is not listed there, any other links?
v5 is published yet on the Cisco web site. If you need details upon what the current spec is you'll need to contact you
local Cisco Representative

Can you prioritize access to specific wireless handsets??
You could assign specific handsets to a different vlan that gets higher priority.

I had heard from a local Cisco Partner that once the survey and implementation of the wireless is complete that I need to have
the network ok'd by Cisco themselves before being able to purchase the 7921 phones. Is this true?
There is a document sent to the customer/partner on basic questions of how the site survey was done and about the
WLAN environment. The questionnaire is designed to assure that the proper precautions for the deployment of
wireless voice were taken.

Can you please tell what is voip traffic model? whether it would be required to do before deploying voip over WLAN?
This design guide may help: http://wwwin-eng.cisco.com/Eng/TME/CSE/DIGs/MainOffice-WLAN.pdf

Did I miss something? Were there any documents you posted that I could have read as background preparation for this
seminar?
No, you did not miss anything. We try to hit a broad area of technical expertise. Your feedback however sounds
valuable. You can weigh in a discussion thread at www.mytechwisetv.com or also fill out an evaluation.

Is it the WCS needed for Layer 3 roaming?
WCS is not required for layer 3 roaming. A Wireless LAN Controller is what was mentioned by Larry in the video to
facilitate layer 3 roaming. WCS is an optional (but highly recommended) management application for use with our
Wireless LAN Controllers.

Planning to deploy wireless aps with 7921's in an environment were commercial electronic detonators (blasting caps) are used.
Is this a bad idea?
this is somewhat beyond the scope of this discussion, but given the restrictions on RF around blasting caps you need to
thoroughly investigate this issue. You should also investigate the rules in both 2.4GHz and 5Ghz

What encryption standard does 7921 uses?
Advanced Encryption Schemes (AES) Temporal Key Integrity Protocol Message Integrity Check 40 and 128 bit WEP

Will this video cast be available after the demo and if so, where?
They sure will. We will have them posted at www.cisco.com/go/interact plus check out the techwisetv rogue site at
www.mytechwisetv.com For daily updates look for Robb and Jimmy Ray on twitter at www.twitter.com

Is that Cisco Spectrum Expert that shows WAP channel usage?
No that is the Cisco Wireless Manager for the Cisco WLCS

What version of ICT for Nokia dual will include to obtain TFTP server by DHCP method?
The latest versions should work for DHCP, however, Nokia is constantly trying to improve this with each version.

Could you repeat what sw/hw was used to survey the network?
This software is the management software for the Cisco Wireless solution

On the wcs can you fully configure them via the gui or are there specific functions you can only do via the cli?
almost all configuration can be done by the WCS. These are the typical WLAN operation changes, but there can still be
some changes that need to be performed on the WLC

Is Cisco thinking to launch a wireless certification equal to the CCVP for Telephony?
Such a program is in development right now. No date has been announced.

We have free cell to cell calling. Does Cisco offer a 'GSM' appliance that takes GSM SIM cards - thus allowing free calls
outside of the WiFi LAN?
No. This is not a solution that Cisco provides.

Triple CCIE? Wow good for him, it certainly shows he knows what he is talking about!
No kidding! Hard enough getting one and keeping it up to date. He must not watch too much Star Trek...

What was the other software he used, besides Cisco Spectrum Expert?
Air Magnet Laptop Analyzer

How many calls can be supported with a good quality by one AP Do wireless Mesh support VoIP?
On the 802.11b AP we can support effectively up to 7 voice devices; on the 801.11g AP - 10-12 and on the 801.11a AP
we can support up to 20 devices. Mesh at this point doesn’t support Voice devices.

Is the Wireless Location Appliance mandatory in order to contain Rogue AP?
No. Rogue AP containment is a feature of the Wireless LAN Controller. "Cisco WCS with Location" enabled you to
find the physically, real-time location of a Rogue AP. Adding the location appliance to this solution allows you to see
multiple Rogue APs on the same floor plan at a given time and also allows you keep track of the history of such devices.

What version will the cisco spectrum tools interface with the WCS
The current version is recommend and it is available for download from CCO.

We need to implement interior APs with Mesh APs on the same network?
It depends on the area you need to cover. A site survey is usually the best way to help determine this.

why did cisco drop support for mesh APs in wlc r5?
support wasn't actually dropped, but the two software trains have split for a while. So mesh is currently on a different
software chain.

Is using IP Communicator on a wireless laptop the same as using a 7921 on the WLAN?
Not completely. IP Communicator will provide VoWLAN but the wireless client driver and software will not be tuned
to provide the roaming capabilities that the 7921 offers or the WMM capabilities that the 7921 offers.

What are "dual mode services"?
Dual mode implies support for both Cellular and Wi-Fi networks.

How much bandwidth is required by your ISP to even think about deploying this technology?
Typically latency is more of a concern than bandwidth. Round trip latency between packets should be 100ms or less.
The amount of bandwidth required will be dictated by the number of simultaneous calls across the WAN link. A good
rule of thumb is to provision 80kbps per voice conversation at high quality or 32kbps for toll quality.

Is this basically call forwarding to your wireless handset??
If we are talking about SNR (single number reach) it is not call forwarding. We are creating an identity inside CUCM
of your mobile device and sim-ringing that device with your desk phone. The advantage here is that we can "anchor"
the call in CUCM for other features, and also reach several (up to 10) other off-net numbers at the same time.

can you please tell the approx price of 7921?
For pricing questions, please contact your partner or Cisco account manager.

Does TSP the QOS reservation you talked about act as RSVP ?
TSpec does act in a similar way to RSVP, but it operates at Layer 2. And is for each WLAN association, whereas RSVP
is looking at your end to end connection

How much bandwidth does the average call use?
The bandwidth per call will vary based on the code that is chosen. Typically the g.711 codec is used, which creates a
conversation of 64kbps. As with any data communication, there is also overhead for the packets, generally these will
take the 64kbps up to ~80kbps. The other possible codes will use less bandwidth than this.

what is mobile communicator ??
CUMC - cisco unified mobile communicator is an application that runs on smart phones like BlackBerries and Nokia
Eseries devices. It allows mobile users access to their enterprise call logs, directory look up, visual voicemail,
messaging, and presence. Check out the link below:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps7271/product_solution_overview0900aecd805e6a3c.html

yes the 200 hours is true i have 5 of the 7921's
The battery management is awesome in that phone!!

how is e911 handled on wireless
The wireless phones can be tracked by the IP subnet.

little off the topic but are there any plans for the CCIE lab exam? Or perhaps there is an archived showing?
The party line is to say something like "Cisco is always looking for ways to improve the CCIE process..." I sure hope
they are, that would be mega cool

Are there any exceptions to any of this information with respect to integration with a CUE/CME system.
No - not specifically. The only difference is that call control is being provided by CME - but shouldn't have any bearing
on the WLAN design and functionality. The 7921 is supported in CME version 4.1 and greater.

Is possible to connect internal APs like 1130 and mesh AP on the same network or We need two WLC and WCS to do it?
At this point you need two separate WLCs and WCS's to support internal and mesh AP's.

can you control the security of the device - for example disabling over the wireless network in case of loss can the security of
these devices be controlled over the wireless network - for example disabling in the case of loss?
Yes, every wireless VoIP device has a MAC address; that MAC address can be disabled in Call Manager or on the
controller to prevent that devices from further communication.

What methods are used for security on VOIP devices? IE. 802.1x, NAC, etc?
some of these depend on the VoIP handset, but the 7921G supports WPA, WPA2 both Pre Shared Key, and Enterprise
(802.1X). On top of this you have the Wireless IPS features of the Cisco Unified Wireless Network, and the Cisco
Security Products features behind Cisco Unified Wireless Network

ROFL...more like my '84 Ford Escort I had in High School
Oh mercy! Earned those stripes!

What is the cost of the 7912G and what else would you need
You would need to speak with your local Cisco AM/Partner but device is shipped with a charger but if desired a cradle
can be purchased.

Are all the q/a saved for future perusal?
They sure will. We will have them posted at www.cisco.com/go/interact plus check out the techwisetv rogue site at
www.mytechwisetv.com For daily updates look for Robb and Jimmy Ray on twitter at www.twitter.com

do options exist to deploy Cisco VoIP over a non-Cisco wireless access solution?
You can deploy over a non-Cisco WLAN, however, the solution is only "supported" on Cisco AP's. We have spent a
great deal of effort to ensure voice quality on our WLAN products.

Can you explain the CAC in detail ?
Voice over Wireless LAN 4.1 Design Guide www.cisco.com/go/srnd Enterprise Mobility 4.1 Design Guide
www.cisco.com/go/srnd These guides are your best source of information on VoWLAN.

Are those dual-mode phones commonplace yet or are they relatively new?
Dual mode devices are increasing in popularity and are fairly commonplace now.

Will these questions and answers will be available in the archives of this seminar?
They sure will. We will have them posted at www.cisco.com/go/interact plus check out the techwisetv rogue site at
www.mytechwisetv.com For daily updates look for Robb and Jimmy Ray on twitter at www.twitter.com

How can you configure CAC for voice traffic only? Where is the function located? Is it done at AP or at both AP and phone?
Thanks.
Yes CAC is generally configurable for Voice and Video traffic. In the Cisco Unified Wireless Network, the Voice and
Video CAC configuration is part of the wireless configuration under each of the bands. CAC needs to be supported on
both the AP and phone.

You refered to a previous show. Should I already know the basics before this current show makes sense for putting together a
basic system? It seems, this lesson is not about a salesperson connecting to the server at home, and being able to talk to the
office at the same time using the same connection. Bye.
I background in wireless is certainly recommend for deployment as well as voice

Finally! Someone is putting site survey on a phone!!!
It is truly a great tool. I have used it several times at customers to debug their VoWLAN implementation. I highly
recommend customers deploy a few phones, fire up the site survey tool, and walk around with a headset on to ensure
proper coverage. The latest 7921G SS tool has further enhancements.

I was told by our IS department that whenever our 7920 IP phones associate to the AP's it drops to 802.11b operation only
effecting other wireless clients and forces communication on the "B" band only. Is this true? Just to note we have a mix of
wireless clinets (7920's/7921's/laptops etc.) I believe the wireless team is using the WISM controllers for there access points.
802.11g-capable devices are backwards compatible with 802.11b devices. This functionality is provided by using two
different modulation techniques within the same 2.4GHz wireless band. When an 802.11b client joins an 802.11g AP, it
must switch modulation types back and forth when communicating between 802.11g and then 802.11b clients. This
does reduce the overall throughput of an AP but does not create a situation where the 802.11g clients reduce to 802.11b
data rates.

Where can I get detailed info on the Cisco wireless analysis products?
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9393/index.html

How can you leverage my cell phone service provide with my WLAN so that my phone can switch from my WLAN access to
my cell phone service provide based access
Visit http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/voicesw/product_promotion0900aecd8064f087.html to learn more
about leveraging dual-mode devices.

Is this wireless connect to UC 520?
Yes, all the Cisco wireless VoIP devices will work with the UC500 series devices. For better compatibility also use the
500 series Mobility Express controllers.

What is POS?
An old '75 Camero I had in High School

How many wireless phones can you connect to a 802.11a radio
It does depend on the environment but given good coverage to a 802.11a channel about 20 calls.

How can you extend the wireless VoIP to a large campus where users go outside the buildings where the APs are?
One way would be to add 1500 series mesh AP's to cover the outdoor areas. Depending on distances and the density of
users, you could also leverage outdoor antenna options to extend the coverage range.

What are the tools described previously? Cisco Spectrum Expert and... ??
Airmagnet Laptop Analyser. It is the best. I have been using it for years

I can't find the enhancements of the ccx v5 release (other than MFP and e911 tspec controls from some documentation), what's
the link to the enhancements?
Please review the information on the following URL for complete CCX features
http://www.cisco.com/web/partners/pr46/pr147/partners_pgm_concept_home.html

This Voice guy is using far too many acronyms
It is world we live in. Imagine how hard it would be to hear the full name of every acronym every time!

I mean the battery life of the 7921 if a person is keep on talking
The 7921G provides up to 200 hours standby time or 15.5 hours talk time.

Is Cisco at Interopp this week?
Yes we sure are!! check it out!!
http://www.interop.com/lasvegas/2008/cisco/

What avg battery life for the phones?
The Cisco 7921G phone provides up to 200 hours standby time or 15.5 hours talk time.

What training can you recommend?
Training partners such as Global Knowledge and Gigawave have VoWLAN classes:
http://www.globalknowledge.com/training/course.asp?pageid=9&courseid=10026&catid=206&country=United+States
We also have design/deployment guides that are very helpful on the 7920, 7921G, Nokia, and WLAN.

Do you measure your gain with a network analyzer
I certain what you mean by gain, but your network analyser will give you a receieved signal strength, and would allow
you to measure gain differences in different configuration. For engineering gain measurements more specialized tools
are required, as a network analysers primary role is not signals strength measurement most of them focus on protocol
decoding

Does it support Nortel VOIP products?
Nortel and other 802.11 VoIP products are supported.

good popcorn interference
Thank you! I wish he would have shared it! Man I was hungry!!

mmmm....popcorn. It does happen though, so it brings out a good point
And he didn't even share!! Whatta whanker!!!

Are you guys planning on doing a show on the location appliance integration?
We're not aware of one scheduled at this time.

Are there some links to the software tools that were shown?
most of the tools shown can be seen at the following URL www.airmagnet.com

Please repeat the name of these tools
AirMagnet Laptop Analyzer and Cisco Cognio Spectrum Analyzer

Can we get the name of the software we was using
The first one was Cognio or Cisco Spec An, the second one was Airmagnet

Can you list the names of the tools just demoed?
Cisco Spectrum Expert and Airmagnet Laptop Analyzer.

What is the software that was use for analyzing phone call frequences
Cisco Cognio Spectum Analy

What is the name of that application for real time analysis?
Airmagnet laptop

What is the name of the tool that he's talking about. I came into meeting late...thanks....Pricing approx?
The first one was Cognio or Cisco Spec An, the second one was Airmagnet

What are the recommended model APs (Cisco's of course) to support wireless Nokia Duals phones?
Any currently shipping Cisco AP is supported with this solution. For a new purchase the 1130, 1240 or 1250 should be
considered.

based on the question earlier (preventing laptop from over-subscribing the medium), would bandwidth reservation for voice
address this issue? (assigning 50% to voice wlan)
Yes, on the controller interface for voice there is an option to define the voice bandwidth percent of the channel. The
default is 75%.

What's the name of this tool?
The first one was Cognio or Cisco Spec An, the second one was Airmagnet

What is the name of this 3rd tool?
Air Magnet Laptop Analyzer

We currently have 1250 models at our sites and they work great!!
Great

Can you publish the tools they are using for us again?
Air Magnet Laptop Analyzer

How many Number of IP phones can connect to a single AP.
It depends on the type of radio and a few other factors. Generally, you can expect good quality with up to 7 phones
connecting to a G radio and 9 phones leveraging MIMO with an N radio.

How can I improve my wireless network to use Nokia Dual? I think that the Nokia have a poor radio antenna
The first thing to do is to site survey for VoWLAN to make sure you have the appropriate signal levels and cell overlap

Can you address jitter and packet loss. I assume the tool your looking at now will see this?
The Airmagnet Laptop analyser will easily do this

What is the usability of a VoWLAN telephone on public hotspots, which are likely not designed with CAC for voice?
Best Effort 58 Is there a desing guide about Nokia dual phones?
Here is the link on Cisco:
http://www.cisco.com/web/partners/downloads/partner/WWChannels/download/nokia_design_guide.pdf and on
Nokia's: http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com/nokia_intellisync_call_connect_for_cisco_downloads.php

When is the ccx v5 "official" release?
CCX v5 has been officially released and is supported on current versions of our APs and Wireless LAN Controllers.
The Cisco CB21AG client card also supports CCX v5. Partner products supporting CCX v5 are expected this calendar
year.

i'm hungry
...for more TechWiseTV? If so, go to www.cisco.com/go/interact

What are the recommended model APs (Cisco's of course) to support wireless VoIP?
As the VoWLAN features are based upon software releases you have a wide range of APs to choose from. Generally a
dual band AP is recommended as it allows you to take advantage of the 5GHz spectrum. If you a looking to purchase
new APs, the 1250 should be on the top of your list as it is the latest and has 11n support

ISM 2.4GHz band can be used by any device which has less than 100mW ERP not 1 wattt
Under FCC Rule Part 15.407, known as the Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure, 2.4-2.4835 can run a max
on 1W www.fcc.gov

Is there any specialized hardware required to run the cisco spectrum expert software?
Yes, you have to use Cisco spectrum expert PC Card bus adapter in conjunction with the spectrum expert software.
Both are available as a bundle when you purchase Spectrum Expert

Does the Spectrum expert software run on the internal wi-fi of the laoptop or does it need external radio equipment?
It requires the Spectrum Expert client card.

Any tips for a manufacturing plant environment with lots of steel beams?
I suggest a very good site survey specifying the most important app. Keep in mind that a heavy multipath environment
is best dealt with by using a device that uses multipath to it's advantage. 802.11n uses the multipath environment to
enhance the signal to the client.

What is the name of this tool and where can you get it?
The tool is "Cisco Spectrum Expert". Information about it is available here:
http://tools.cisco.com/search/display?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cisco.com%2Fen%2FUS%2Fproducts%2Fps9393
%2Findex.html&pos=1&strqueryid=1&websessionid=WZvyUzaQ_jpoQFiRKyU3zkg

What's the best way to determine # of APs required
A site survey is the best method. The survey should take into account the type of radio's as well as applications like
voice and video.

What was the free UC that they were offering across the screen?
There are two free workshops available regarding Mobility and Voice over WLANs. Click the link in the right of the of
the video console for more information.

Can you repeat about hidden node please?
Hidden node is kinda of confussing concept. Basically, it means that since wireless is one way communication, a client
device is visible from the access point but the other devices on that same access point can not see that "hidden" client to
communicate with

Can WMM be used to give some calls (like emergency etc ) more priority over other calls ?
The current technology is not spec’d out for E911 calls. In the future a call could be started as E911 and it would then
get priority.

Are there any special considerations for Voice over Wireless Mesh networks?
Currently in the case of mesh network, the QoS for voice is best effort since the mesh protocol tends to introduce
latency and decreased bandwidth as you increase the number of hops.

Wouldn't that delay our calls. if there is an emergency to make a call but CAC refuses it then what happens?
When CAC returns a refused response the phone is expected to search for another channel to put up the call on. The
current technology is not spec’d out for E911 calls. In the future a call could be started as E911 and it would then get
priority.

Great Penmanship. Just like mine.
Thank you Dude!! I have been working at it... I know I should not have skipped out on Kindergarden to go fishin'

Any customers from steel industry using Cisco wireless implementaion for voice in production areas where RF management is
a challenge?
Yes. Cisco does have customers utilizing voice over WiFi in the steel (and similar) industry. Your Cisco Account Team
will be able to provide you with those references.

multicast roaming is supported now? say, for music-on-hold
yes, multicast roaming is supported now on the WLCs.

How do you secure your voice calls over the Wireless LAN
With encryption, authentication and intrusion prevention, the wireless network is just a secure as the wired network.

How can you prevent a file transfer from someone's laptop from blasting the wireless? There is no CAC in the laptop....
WiFi is a shared medium so CAC becomes a crucial component. As you say, we cannot stop the data client from
transmitting, however, we can tell the phone that the WiFi is congested. QBSS in the 7920 was designed for this, and in
CCXv4 we have TSPEC. When the voice client learns that the WLAN is busy it will look for another AP to roam to.
This is why our design guides advocate using overlapping AP's on different channels, and also to separate voice into a
different band (a/bg) when possible.

Do wireless clients (i.e.: laptop PCs) need to support QOS and 802.11e in order for Wireless VoIP to work reliably?
This depends on your deployment. If you a using VoWLAN handsets, the QoS support for PCs isn't as important, as
the non-QoS (non-WMM) are treated as best effort. If you are using the laptops as a VoWLAN client then it is
recommended to use WLAN QOS for best results

Along with this TV episode, are the questions along with this presentation archived?
Yes they sure will be. Also check out TechWiseTV's rogue web site for tons more good stuff at: www.mytechwisetv.com

re: so, with which version release of wlc is multicasting supported?
Multicasting has been supported on the Unified WLC for quite some time now. You have to review specific release
notes. But it probably has been there since 4.1 or even before. We continuously improve and add additional features as
well, ie multicast roaming.

Is WMM part of standard Cisco wireless controller IOS?
Yes it is. We also support static QBSS.

would it be "reasonable" to conduct VOIP with wireless for house use?? not enterprises ....
yes - it is not part of todays discussion but there are a number of different VoIP handsets for home use already
(Linksys make one). These tend to use other VoIP services and do not necessarily use the same protocols.

What type of band width do you need for say 30 users with there network open and there e-mail going on all users??
Bandwidth requirements follow RF channel utilization. For 30 simultaneous VoWLAN users in the same coverage area
you need two to three RF channels with little traffic other than e-mail. If the VoWLAN phone type uses 802.11b you
would need 3 channels and if 802.11a phone then two should be enough.

7921 on N??
The 7921 supports A and G. Since N is backward compatible with a/b/g, a 7921 or other a/b/g clients are supported.

How can we replay the show?
Just go to www.cisco.com/go/interact and click on TechWiseTV

Does Cisco's VoIP solution integrate with existing cell phones?
Cisco supports using dual-mode (802.11 and celluar) types of devices. When in the WLAN a dual-mode phone can call
using VoIP. We can also extend calls out to the cellular side of a dual-mode phone, or any cellular phone for that
matter.

How to provide QoS to Voice over wireless client on Cisco network? Enabling Q0S for client makes all traffic (in addition to
voice traffic) from client get better preference based on voice VLAN.
Enabling WMM is key for WLAN QoS, and VoWLAN. This gives traffic categorised as voice higher priority than
other traffic. WMM is designed to be backwards compatable, and the non-WMM clients on the network are treated as
WMM best effort

I'm hungry, who's providing lunch?
Robb Boyd is. Has AMEX numbers 2451-...

Is there a Cisco VOIP client for Apple's IPhone?
Unfortunately, not at this time.

is there a benefit to using abg(n) ap's and then having voice on a and data on bg?
The great thing with a/b/g AP's is that you can separate data and voice traffic to different bands. A is great for voice
because it has high speed, and many more channels. However, if you have recently refreshed your laptops it may be
easier to move them to "a" and have your voice on "b/g". It really depends on the environment.

are they going to talk on nokia and cisco integration? Nokia e-series
We touch on it with Mike Coffin but probably not enough detail to satisfy you... stay tuned. Most of our focus will be
on the 7921

I'm wondering how this is going to integrate with Femtocells and other technologies that companies like AT&T and T-Mobile
are developing. Things like T-Mobile "Hotspot @ Home".
Femtocells would be an alternative to this technology. The T-Mobile Hot-spot solution is more in line with the
discussion today.

How does behave VoWLAN when using H-REAP in branch offices? Are there any considerations we should be aware of?
With the latest release of the UW controller software 5.x you can certainly use voice with H-REAP. CCKM is now
supported with HREAP as well. You can also authenticate with local radius server on the HREAP. You have to be
connected the very first time to the controller for CCKM to work and there is a limitation of 25 remote HREAP devices
per group for seamless secure roaming.

To provide support what class or education would you suggest to help support
Global Knowledge offers a good class: VoWLAN - Voice over Wireless LAN v1.1

Does VoIP phone are Ok for N 5ghz A.P.?
Stay tuned - this discussion is coming up when we talk to Larry Ross. Great question.

How much time i have to expect before deploying VoIP on wireless LAN if VoIP is already running in our campus (40 A.P.
on 7 stage building)?
You can start to levarage your WLAN deployment at any time for voice applications as long as your coverage is
pervasive and the network is stable.

How is wireless voice traffic affected with the emerging 802.11n radios, is there specific pitfalls or statagies that need to be
adressed before implementing voice into a 802.11n network design?
Voice will benefit from the MIMO aspect - and some other considerations. Take a look at
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/wireless/ps5678/ps6973/ps8382/prod_brochure0900aecd806b8a92_ns767_
Networking_Solutions_Brochure.html

What is the recommended access point for VoIP.
The 1250 is a great option due to features like MIMO that provides better reliability, predictable throughput, and
better coverage. The 1100's and other 1200 series AP's support VoIP as well.

Can you recap it again or make the 6 challenges available offline?
You see more in the show notes at www.mytechwisetv.com. I just added them. But here you go! 1. Quality of Service 2.
Wireless is a Shared Resource 3. Roaming and Re-Authentication 4. Increased Support Requirements 5. End User
expectations 6. Clients are evolving

How secure is the voice traffic via wireless - i.e. HIPAA regulations
Voice traffic can be secured from the handset to the AP, and then on the LAN as well. Very much the same as your
laptop would authenticate and communicate securely. Several EAP types are available, as well as WEP, WPA, and
WPA2. We have several design guides which can further explain various security implementations.

how does cisco manages handoffs from AP to AP
Cisco WLANs, utilizing autonomous APs or LWAPP (controller based) APs utilize two features (CCKM or PKC) to
support fast, secure roaming, allowing authenticated clients to roam from one AP to another without interrupting a
voice conversation.

i just joined in did i miss much
This episode will also be available on demand by the end of the day. All TechWiseTV episodes are archived at
www.cisco.com/go/interact

What if they use multiple vendors in wireless APs?
Voice clients and the AP’s that support the voice clients should be marking the packets with WMM / 802.11e markings
to ensure packet delivery.

How does the new 802.11n standard help/improve QoS and authentication ?
802.11n benefits the overall wireless deployment by improving predicability, throughput and reliability of the network.
This automatically translates into a better QoS for voice applications.

Is there a Cisco VOIP client for symbian OS ?
For Nokia Symbian, we have a client that can be installed on Eseries devices (like E60, E61, E61i). The client can be
downloaded from Nokia's web site and has a trial period so you can test with it. It will run with CUCM 4.x and higher.
