Special Guest, Carl Solder
Carl has been in the I.T. industry for 24 years and currently serves as a Distinguished Technical Marketing Engineer (DTME) with the Campus Switching Systems Technology Group (CSSTG).

Carl has been with Cisco nearly 13 years of which the last 6 years has been with the CSSTG as a TME working predominantly on the Catalyst 6500 platform. Prior to this he worked as a Consulting Systems Engineer with the Asia Pac Core Technology Group in Singapore providing technical marketing support for the Catalyst switching product line for all countries in the Asia Pac region. His initial tenure in Cisco was working as a field Systems Engineer in Australia focusing on Routers Switches, Security and Voice.

Prior to working with Cisco, Carl worked at IBM for 11 years. During this time he worked in a number of areas including applications and systems programming, systems engineering and consulting primarily in the area of Mainframe, LAN communications and storage subsystems..

Carl has a Bachelors degree with a double major in Programming and Systems Analysis from Curtin University in Western Australia. In 1999 Carl was awarded the inaugural "Top SE" for the entire Asia Pac theater. He also completed his CCIE certification within a year of joining Cisco and is currently an active member of the 10 year CCIE club.

Goal: To educate the technical and business marketplace on how mass collaboration and social networking is fundamentally changing how business is done today.

We are in the middle of a revolution.

Social networking is exploding : MySpace, Facebook, new blogs every second of the day.

But are these the revolution itself? Or simply the more obvious indicators to something much deeper and more meaningful. As you will soon find out, Traditional mainstays of corporate architecture and business models are fundamentally changing – how wecreate goods and services, how we create wealth and how we innovate. Literally new modes of production where you can either acknowledge and adapt or ignore and potentially perish.

It’s always difficult to tell when you are in the middle of a change. A revolution can sneak up on you even when all the elements are right in front of you. The ‘dots’ are all right there…but it’s not always easy to connect them. There is a tendency to look at the evidence and dismiss it as ‘not applicable’ to me…to my situation, to my business model.

But to dismiss the evidence is to put the firm at risk. Smart companies are encouraging rather than fighting this change as they harness mass collaboration to create real value and enjoy phenomenal success as a result.

Seriously, I can share a couple of ideas on deployments we've done.

1. Customers seem to routinely underestimate the training requirements for their OWN people needed to own and operate an IPCC system. Personally, if they aren't arranging training or purchasing day 2 support from someone, serious consideration should be given to not doing the deal.

2. One of the big requests that is under served by Cisco documentation is statistics display. Traditional Call Centers will have a board showing information about calls in the queue, etc. With the advent of the real time reporting tool, you can use a projector or plasma screen as a workstation display, and set up a report on a 10 second refresh to project this information. It can actually be done cheaper than the purchase of a traditional wallboard. There is code on the Netpro forums for building your own wallboards in this manner that can be used with IPCC Express.

3. We have one customer who has asked us to implement a solution to provide them a way to redirect inbound calls to different numbers based on the number that is initiating the call to a message that says "go away and don't call back". The specific need is a former employee that calls in to senior executives. They have MGCP gateways, and we realized by routing the calls through the IVRs with a in and out (IVR never actually speaks to the caller) that you could do some quick and easy call screening/call redirection based on a database lookup.

I don’t have the details on what Cisco has invested over the years to get to this point but we are now starting to see the fruits of their labor become public as the very foundation of how network security is implemented from the ground up. What I am referring to is TrustSec. To fully grasp the enormity of the change being moved on here - lets remind ourselves of how security has been traditionally handled: We had a perimeter whereby everything inside was deemed good and everything outside: bad. simply really. Except for two things: the perimeter has dissolved for all the reasons we are already familiar with AND compliance issues among many others have forced us (quite reasonably of course) to distrust internal users. As an industry we have attempted to solve these new challenges by getting better at examining application flows, implementing policy by looking at traffic...but in general, still fighting the often losing battle of determining role by LOCATION. We fundamentally understand however that a far more accurate determination of role would be by the PERSON of course.

Cisco TrustSec re-factors the problem very creatively. The architecture encompasses these ideas:

1. Make the enterprise network more trustable (increase the confidence about the data that has transited the network);

2. When traffic enters the network tag each packet with an identifier that signifies what is known about it and do so in a way that most directly reflects how that data can be trusted.

3. Filter the data on exit from the network (e.g., at the point the network connects to a server) by acting on the tags.

Simple right? It is an ambitious undertaking as it encompasses technology changes that must be standardized across every device on the network. This is done by making changes to the ethernet packet itself. I told you this was a ground up change. So who better to ask about security and ethernet...than our very own packet monkey, Jimmy Ray.

VMsafe is an interface allowing security vendors to protect virtual machines without having to install agents inside each guest operating system.

While security products like antivirus will still have to install inside a dedicated VM, they will be able to monitor what's happening inside other virtual machines from a completely new perspective: the hypervisor level.

This will allow checking which traffic is entering or leaving a VM, or even which data is being executed inside it (looking at CPU states, memory pages and OS processes list). All done in a transparent way.

When you think about it, this revolutionary approach has two remarkable benefits: first of all it saves precious physical resources and management efforts without duplicating the same security agent inside each guest OS, secondarily it prevents the security agents from being directly attacked and possibly disabled.
