| de_great | CUCM - ASA Secure Voice | TechWiseTV | 3 | Jul 3 2008, 12:21 PM EDT by JimmyRay10acn | |||

I have been struggling here lately on the topic of how to properly Secure my Voice Network. I heard the PodCast on the ASA implementation and have read that is the way to go. However the how is always left out.... I think a segment on this would be great.
Can you explain in more detail how the ASA 5500 is implemented in the CUCM World. Voice Security is starting to be a reoccurring theme, but I am not finding much information pertaining to the Cisco Recommended Procedures or How tos (if you will.) For Example:What type of ASA is required for what level? When I have a HQ of 2000 Phones and remote sites also with 1000....what should be used at the locations? Is there a Matrix of some sort? How is it implemented (obviously at the network level) but how is the CUCM connected..... via IPSEC with the ASA? Is there an SRND for a ASA Voice environment? Obviously due to the TLS Proxy the ASA is very attractive, but what are the ups and downs compared to GetVPN? For many people dealing with Firewalls and ASA's on a daily basis these questions might seem a little basic, but for people coming from the "Voice" Unified Communications Area there are a lot of things left unsaid. Unfortunately, when installing a CUCM Cluster and the Customer wants a Secure Voice Network.... they do not understand that this is more network security than voice, and it is up to us to magically come up with the answer. This topic of Voice Security is becoming the number 1 issue with large companies today and the only official statement that I find states that we should use the ASA's. Great.... but how? Thanks

Hi all, I just wanted to pass along some kudos on the Bot Net show. The video didnt work very well at least for myself but the audio was helpful. I understood going in what a bot net was but it was great to hear some ideas on how to protect against them. Keep up the good work.
Thanks,

Guys,
I just wanted to let y'all (im from the south) know what a good show you have. I watched my first one, Voice over WiFi, and it was informative, technical and stayed interesting the entire show. This is perfect for my demographic, twenty something telecommunications sales rep/communications consultant for a local coop, not a specific group at all. Keep the experts on there and keep the buzz words flying, and JR keeping challenging them it makes us all think.. lol. Later Sig

Guys:
In the latest Security podcast on Security in a Web 2.0 world, JRP mentioned an age-old email exploit being dressed up and foisted upon people. IIRC it went like this- an email comes from a friend (whose machine has been compromised) and says IRS can speed up your $600 Rebate - it has a link and if the victim follows it they are asked for personal data that could enable identity theft. So I share this with my team and the say, "hoax". But I don't see anything in shownotes with a link to where the vlunerability is discussed to disprove their vituperative invectives. "Hoax?" me thinks a pox on them for maligning the ever watchful JRP. So - can either of you guys share a link or alert outlining the validity? TIA

Very interesting travel tracking site for those of us who travel a lot and would like to be notified if certain friends are in the same city at the same time. Great idea. I have not signed up yet but I will soon. Anyone try it yet? |

I have two show ideas.
My first idea regards industry certifications. What are your guys' opinions on these certifications and whom do you believe should be attaining these certifications? Which certification would be appropriate for what type of work/career? Outline some of the certs (vender and vender neutral), why certify or why not, certification process, pros and cons, etc. My second idea is about the industry and how someone may become involved. Where should someone who is interested in networking/security begin their path to eventually working (I would call it playing) in the field? What entry-level jobs they should pursue and what qualifications should they possess (not necessarily to mean certs)? What opportunities exist in these fields (government, corporate, non-profit, etc.)? I realize that both of my ideas are geared towards people less or not as experienced in networking/security and I'm not sure if that is an audience you're attempting to appeal to but I thought I would share those with you guys. I know I would be interested in those shows, especially the latter. Look forward to the next podcast! CD

typically noob or n00b is used in a derogatory sense. As in to call someone a complete idiot because they know nothing, as if they were new. "Newbie," however, is generally seen as a polite term for someone who is new to something. Though this isn't always the case, it's still more polite than noob or n00b. As per the idea of "TechWiseTV Bootcamp," you could probably do something that would emphasize the word "boot" in "bootcamp." Like "TechWiseTV BootCamp" or "TechWiseTV Boot-camp" or some such.

Team:
You guys rock! Can we keep working on the "Cisco on Cisco" story? I've done some brainstorming with the Engineers lately and would be happy to share the info to build into a show focused on Core. In addition, we have a lot of new things coming out on Core - Empowered Branch 4 has Javalin, Video Surveillance, 3G, new security apps, new admin tools, and several other capabilities that could be linked into the Voice and Security apps we discuss on the other shows. There's also some new testing being done on WAAS and VSEC that will address several TDM concerns around T-trains. Whaddaya think?

Wonder what people think of a single condensed version of the whole "Turn It On" series. Like a highlight reel for the Techwise TV TIO issues covered. I know a podcast would be nice ;-)

I would like to get a better public explanation on Cisco's Pro/Cons list of the different deployment options for deploying L3 OOB in a campus environment. Why chose ACLs/VRF/PBR for your deployments and why? What are the deciding factors?

Anyone have an example of how you used technology at work that yielded unexpected results?
I can think of positive and negative ones... I remember an instance, several companies ago (not where I work now, obviously), wherein our little branch office was just experimenting with wireless technology. Securing the dang thing was so low on the priority list, ranking next to hey-look-I-can-print-from-stall#3-in-the-men's-room novelty. Several days later, a mysterious page printed. It was from a random commuter from a bus stop outside the office. It said "I can see your network." You can bet IT developed sec policies real quick! Good news is, I hear that you can still print from stall#3, and the office hasn't been breached since that incident.
